Here I share the projects that I am currently working on, or that have been newly released to the wild...or for permit, but saying I released them to the wild is much more fun.

Monochromatic Materials

When choosing materials for the exterior home, less is more. Too many colours, styles, and textures can make a home look busy and disjointed.

Try this instead:

Pick a timeless colour and choose materials that match that motif. This way the interest comes from the varying textures rather than multiple colours.

For example, this homeowner went with a travertine colour and selected a stone, brick, and siding within that colour family:

Home Library

A home library offers a quiet retreat. In today’s fast-paced, digitally connected world, it provides a serene escape from the constant noise and distractions.

This one doubles as an office to allow for a multipurpose space. The supply closet allows for unsightly office items (like a printer) to be tucked away out of sight, leaving only the beauty of the books on display.

Captivating Cabana

How do you spend time outdoors when the weather gets warm, and still have the comforts of home?

Build a cabana!

Today’s cabanas have a secondary living area, sometimes with fireplaces, and if there’s a pool nearby, a bathroom and change room as well.

Like this one for example, with the bath and pool equipment room on the left, a sunroom on the right, and an covered patio in the middle, perfect for lounging on a summer day!

Black Exterior Accents

You know how black goes with everything? The same is true for a home’s exterior. Just look at how the black accents on this home make it pop!

Double Kitchen Delight

The two kitchen house is making a comeback. The second kitchen used to be located in the basement of the home for canning, but that isn’t the case any longer. The secondary kitchen is now typically located adjacent to the main kitchen.

A double kitchen is a haven for households where multiple cooks reign. No more bumping elbows or jostling for counter space! With two separate cooking areas, family members or friends can work side by side harmoniously, preparing meals together and sharing the joy of culinary creations without any hindrance.

For those who love to entertain, a double kitchen is a game-changer. While one section can be dedicated to meal preparation, the other can serve as a presentation area or a beverage station. This not only streamlines the cooking process during gatherings but also allows you to showcase your culinary skills while keeping the behind-the-scenes action discreet.

Double kitchens open the door to separate design possibilities. You can opt for distinct aesthetics for each kitchen section, catering to your personal style preferences. Whether you prefer a sleek and modern cooking area or a cozy and rustic prep zone, a double kitchen lets you showcase your design sensibilities without compromise.

A double kitchen can be a significant selling point. Potential buyers are often drawn to homes that offer unique and practical features. A double kitchen not only enhances the overall functionality of your home but also adds a touch of luxury that can set your property apart in a competitive market.

So, if you’re building a new home, the double kitchen trend is certainly worth exploring!

Mimic Cottage Style

For the ultimate ‘stay-cation’, make your home like a lake-front cottage.

Wood accents, screened-in porches, wood-burning fireplaces, and lots of windows all contribute to making you feel like you’re in a woodsy retreat!

Backyard Homes: a Multi-Purpose Asset

In an era where space and flexibility are at a premium, backyard homes, also known as accessory dwelling units (ADUs), have emerged as an ingenious solution that not only addresses housing needs but also opens up a world of possibilities for homeowners. These small, self-contained living spaces nestled in your backyard offer an array of uses that go far beyond traditional living arrangements. Let’s delve into the exciting ways you can utilize a backyard home to enrich your lifestyle and meet your evolving needs.

1. A Haven for Guests

Imagine having a welcoming oasis for your guests, when they’re visiting from out of town. A backyard home provides the perfect blend of comfort and privacy, ensuring your guests feel right at home while giving you the peace of mind that comes with knowing everyone has their own space.

2. Secluded Home Office or Creative Sanctuary

A backyard home can transform into a dedicated home office or studio. Stepping out of the main house into your private workspace not only boosts productivity but also helps establish clear boundaries between work and leisure.

3. Rental Income and Financial Freedom

One of the most attractive benefits of a backyard home is its potential to generate rental income. By renting out the ADU, you can offset mortgage payments and expenses, effectively turning your property into an income-generating asset.

4. Multigenerational Living

For families seeking a harmonious balance between togetherness and independence, a backyard home provides an ideal solution. Aging parents or young adults can enjoy their own living space while remaining closely connected to the main house.

5. The Ideal “Me Time” Retreat

Escape the hustle and bustle of daily life by transforming your backyard home into a personal retreat. Whether you’re an avid reader, a meditation enthusiast, or simply someone who craves moments of solitude, this space can become your sanctuary for relaxation and self-care.

6. Caring for Caregivers

In times when caregiving becomes a necessity, a backyard home can provide caregivers with a dedicated living space. This arrangement ensures that both caregivers and care recipients have the space they need while remaining in close proximity.

The beauty of a backyard home lies in its adaptability. As your needs evolve, so can the purpose of this space. From housing for extended family members to a cozy reading nook, the possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

Luxurious Showers: Elevating your Self-Care Routine

In the pursuit of ultimate relaxation and self-care, there’s no denying that our bathrooms play a significant role. Among all the elements that make up this personal oasis, a large shower undoubtedly stands out as a symbol of luxury and indulgence. Gone are the days when the bathroom was merely a functional space; it has now evolved into a sanctuary for pampering and rejuvenation.

The first thing that sets a large shower apart is the sheer amount of space it provides. A cramped shower can feel restrictive, whereas a large one gives you the freedom to move around, stretch, and unwind. Go ahead and practice yoga in your shower, I won’t judge. This extra room allows you to shower comfortably without feeling confined, promoting a more calming and enjoyable experience.

Why settle for one showerhead when you can have multiple? Large showers often allow for the installation of multiple showerheads at different heights and angles. Dual showerheads or a combination of handheld and fixed showerheads can create a customizable and invigorating shower experience.

Add a seat to sit and enjoy the water streaming down, making shaving, exfoliating, or simply unwinding even more comfortable, and you have a full-on showering experience rather than rushing through on the way to the next thing on the to-do list.

Cottage Lake Views

Imagine this:

You arrive at the cottage, and you’re greeted by the fresh scent of pine and the gentle rustling of leaves. The cottage itself exudes charm and warmth, with its rustic wooden exterior, quaint porch, and flower boxes overflowing with vibrant blooms. Inside, you find a comfortable living area adorned with comfortable furniture, a crackling fireplace, and large windows that offer captivating views of the natural landscape.

During the day, you have a multitude of activities to choose from. Perhaps you start your morning with a leisurely stroll along a nature trail, basking in the beauty of the surrounding flora and fauna. You’re near a lake, so you can go for a refreshing swim, paddle in a canoe or kayak, or simply relax on the dock, casting your fishing line into the calm waters.

In the evenings, as the sun begins to set, you gather on the deck around a crackling fire with family and friends. The warmth of the fire, the sound of crackling wood, and the soft glow of the flames create a cozy atmosphere for storytelling, laughter, and making lasting memories. You may roast marshmallows and indulge in gooey s’mores, sharing stories and jokes late into the night.

On clear nights, far away from the city lights, the cottage provides an ideal spot for stargazing. The expansive night sky reveals a tapestry of twinkling stars, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a shooting star or the elusive Northern Lights dancing across the horizon.

Throughout your cottage trip, you’ll find solace in the simplicity of nature, reconnecting with loved ones and yourself. It’s a time to unwind, rejuvenate, and appreciate the wonders of the natural world. Whether you spend your days exploring, relaxing, or engaging in activities, a great cottage trip is a true escape into tranquility and an opportunity to create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

The Biggest Benefit to a One-Floor Home

With house prices on the rise, more people are thinking about aging in place.

If the site space allows, a one floor home works best in this scenario.

No stairs to climb!

The absence of stairs eliminates a major obstacle for individuals with mobility challenges or those who use assistive devices like wheelchairs or walkers. Plus stairs can be hazardous for older adults, increasing the likelihood of accidents and injuries. A single-story layout minimizes the risk of falls and eliminates the need to navigate stairs, ensuring a safer living environment.
